ISO & BRC certificates

22nd January 2013 By AndyW

Have you had a visit from your local Environment Agency or Trading Standards Officer recently? Perhaps you are due a visit; either way, is your paperwork up to date? Something you may be asked for is proof that your disposable catering supplies or plastic glasses meet with the certain legal requirements.

Those disposable glasses you purchased for that summer festival… the polycarbonate champagne glasses for the big wedding back in September… even the take away containers you use for Fish & Chip Friday – their origins may be questioned from time to time.

If you have bought your plastic glasses, takeaway containers, paper bags etc from us, we are able to assist you. Although we are a distributor who doesn’t manufacture anything onsite, we have access to the ISO/BRC certificates from our suppliers you may need to show to your local authorities.

What’s a BRC certificate?

In 1998, the British Retail Consortium developed and introduced the BRC Food Technical Standard – it’s in place to ensure that best practice and due diligence are exercised when manufacturers produce their goods. To achieve a BRC certificate, companies have to satisfy a global standard and expectation.

I’ve been asked to prove that the goods have been supplied by a company that is ISO accredited. What’s that?

To be ISO accredited, the company in question needs to provide evidence that they have certain management systems in place, so they can meet the needs of their customers using best practice. These systems are certified by independent bodies and monitored annually.

What about CE stamps on plastic glasses? This is the old CE mark, and is still referred to by some as a Government Stamp. The CE stamp doesn’t concern itself with product quality – it’s there to indicate that an accurate measure is being served, so the customer can see that they aren’t being served any short measures. If you charge for any alcoholic beverages on your premises, your local Trading Standards authority have every right to carry out checks to ensure you are selling alcohol in the correct quantities. Why not look at our range of disposable, reusable and virtually unbreakable CE Stamped glasses?

Requesting the correct data sheet is simple; drop us an email or give us a call with the details – we need to know what you bought from us, and when you bought it. Leave the rest to us. If we don’t have a specific data sheet to hand, simply let the person who requested proof that it’s on it’s way.
